Every mother’s birth and recovery is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. However, after my vaginal birth and breastfeeding journey—filled with trial and error — I discovered some invaluable items that made my postpartum recovery more manageable: My Post-Partum Must Haves: Essential Resources for Moms
1. Postpartum Peri Bottle
Buy a postpartum peri bottle designed with an “upside-down” shape, which is a significant upgrade from the traditional hospital version. If you’ve had a vaginal birth, this tool is essential for your comfort during recovery.
2. Nipple Cream
If you’re breastfeeding, nipple cream will be your best friend. I didn’t fully grasp its importance until I experienced the relief it provides for sore, chafed nipples caused by little ones latching on. Trust me; it’s a game changer!
3. Adult Diapers
I didn’t discover this until my second baby, but adult diapers are a lifesaver. Skip the pads in those first few days (or even weeks). They offer better comfort and absorption during the heavy postpartum bleeding phase.
4. Nursing Pads
I preferred disposable nursing pads over reusable ones. During the early weeks of breastfeeding, your body may struggle to regulate milk supply, leading to leaks. Nursing pads can save you from the discomfort of wet shirts and bras.
5. Nursing Bras
Choose nursing bras with soft cups that can easily be pushed aside for quick access. I found that fiddling with clips was too time-consuming when I was exhausted and busy caring for my newborn.
6. Nursing-Friendly Shirts
Comfortable, nursing-friendly shirts make breastfeeding much easier.
7. Haakaa Pump and Milk Storage Bags
The Haakaa pump is a fantastic tool for collecting any milk that may leak from your breast while nursing. Pair it with milk storage bags to ensure you save every precious drop.
8. A Cozy Robe
A soft, comfortable robe is perfect for those early weeks of skin-to-skin time with your baby. It provides warmth and ease while allowing for easy cuddles with your newborn.
9. Big Electric Heating Pad
You might think a heating pad is excessive, but after giving birth, your entire body may ache. A large electric heating pad can provide much needed relief and comfort during your recovery.
11. Pre-Made Freezer Meals and Snacks You Can Eat With One Hand
You will likely have a big appetite after baby comes, and cooking while taking care of a newborn is really, really hard. Stock your freezer and don’t forget to have muffins, cut fruit, etc on hand too!
12. A Hands Free Electric Breast Pump
With my first baby I only had a manual pump, and the time it took to pump was a challenge and draining. If you plan on primarily breastfeeding and won’t pump often, you can try a manual one to see how you like it, and then decide if you want to upgrade to an electric version.
Postpartum recovery can be challenging, but having the right resources can make a world of difference. I hope my post-partum must haves help you navigate this new chapter of motherhood more comfortably.
