Edmonton family photo session process and FAQs
how does this all work?
I hear you! There’s a lot to consider when you are thinking of getting family photos, and a lot of photographers in Edmonton!
I’m here to make this process easy, from preparing for your shoot all the way to getting the photos onto the walls of your home abd into a heirloom album your grandkids will hold in their hands one day.
Photo Session FAQs
- First we book a call to discuss both the vision and the plan. We’re going to discuss what you want from your photos, and after that we’ll work out the logistics (date, time, location).
- Sign your contract and pay your retainer. Your retainer secures your session date.
- I’m going to help everyone find something perfect to wear - - this is personalized style advice based on your session type and location.
- I’m going to choose the perfect location, based on what you’re looking for (nature vs urban). I’ll factor in the time of year, who is in your session, accessibility, etc. There are so many great photo locations in Edmonton!
- At your session, I’m going to guide you a bit but mostly we’re just going to hang out for about an hour, and I’m going to tell you to relax, have fun, and stop looking at me.
- After your session, you're going to receive all the best images to choose from and pick your favourites.
- When the gallery is ready, you’re going to receive the thoughtfully retouched digital images, your film, as well as your printed album.
- I can’t wait for our photography session!

1. Where will my shoot be?
- We will shoot in your home, or if you prefer an outdoor setting, I will choose the perfect location. There are so may great location spots in Edmonton! Many factors go into deciding on a location - time of year, the ages of your children, accessibility, etc. During the consultation phase we will also discuss whether you want an urban or nature setting. We can also shoot in a studio, for an additional fee.
2. What time will the shoot be?
- If we are shooting in your home, we will shoot during the day and structure the time of the session around your family's schedule. If we are shooting outdoors, your shoot will start an hour before sunset, year round. Note that the sun set is LATE in Edmonton in the summer, so if you need an earlier shoot time, don’t wait to book your fall session!
3. How long will the shoot take?
- Sessions can vary between 30 minutes to 2 hours! It really just depends on your family, how the kids are doing, and the flow of the evening. I can get a ton of meaningful shots in a short time, so don't fret if you don't think your kids can last much longer than half an hour! I always choose locations for family sessions where the kids have something to do, somewhere to explore, and are safe to run wild.
4. What should we wear?
- I will provide detailed guidance on this after you book.
5. Can you photoshop me?
- My rule is if it’ll be gone in a week, I’ll edit it (e.g., a bruise). I don’t heavily airbrush skin or alter facial features or bodies, which is why it is extra important for you to send me photos of you IN YOUR INTENDED OUTFITS well before your shoot date so I can tell you how it fits. If you generally hate how you look in photos and airbrush every perceived imperfection before posting them to Instagram, I'd love to show you how beautiful you truly are - - No airbrushing, no body reshaping.
6. Are we a good fit?
- My style is candid, full of life, warm and imperfect. I require that all new clients book a short phone call with me so I can ensure I understand your vision for a shoot, and so you can ensure I am the photographer for you!
7. What if my kids are feral animals?
- Something I like to make very clear, especially if you have small children, is that I am not going to direct you or your children too much. We are going to head to a location with something to do, whether it’s climbing logs, searching for sticks, or running wild. I want you just to have fun, and not fret about a thing. I’ll follow your family’s lead and capture all your little moments along the way.
