What to Wear for Your Indoor Family Photo Session
- 1. Start Early: Don't leave outfit planning until the last minute. This can lead to unnecessary stress. Start shopping and trying outfits well ahead of time.
- 2. Try on Your Outfits: Have a family member take a photo of you in the outfits you've chosen. This gives you a better perspective than a mirror might, as clothes can fit differently than expected.
- 3. Fit Check With Me: I encourage you to send me pictures of your final outfit selection for a fit check. Remember, I do not edit out bra straps or underwear lines without an additional retouching fee.
- 4. Utilize My Client Closet: I have a curated collection of outfits available for my clients, organized by size, featured on my Client Closet Instagram highlights. Feel free to browse and let me know if you’d like to borrow something! Choosing the right outfits for your family can significantly impact the look of your final images.
Indoor Edmonton Family Photo Session Style Tips
- Soft colours like white, cream, tan, brown, light peach, light pink, light blues, and greys are all beautiful inside.
- When in doubt, wear cream or white. It creates a stunning reflection on your skin and looks timeless.
- Black does not photograph well. It shows a lot of lint and casts harsh shadows.
- Do not wear anything super bright or neon. These colours look jarring.
- Do not wear large flower prints, plaid, or stripes. Some patterns can work well - just send me a picture!
Colours to Wear
- START WITH MOM! ALWAYS START WITH MOM'S OUTFIT. I can't emphasize this enough. Kids and men's clothes are easy. Find something you love and feel great in, and have everyone coordinate around you. The headache of picking kid's outfits first then trying to find something that will compliment them and work for you is almost impossible.
- Don't wear anything you can't crouch or sit in (no short dresses).
- If jeans feel like you, wear them! But, I do suggest no leggings. It won't give your photos a timeless feel.
- If in doubt, a long flowy dress will provide lots of movement and visual interest.
- Wear what you are comfortable in. Not too tight, not too baggy.
- The more skin showing, the better. Skin photographs beautifully.
- Keep feet bare for indoor photo shoots.
Tips For Women
- If men want to wear a button up shirt, please make sure it’s not too small and the buttons aren’t pulling.
- No baseball hats, or logos on shirts.
- Golf shirts typically don’t photograph well as the material is unflattering.
Tips For Men
- Utilize my Client Closet - I have a curated collection of pieces for children and newborns
- No characters, no logos.
- A very small delicate print on kids can look cute, but when in doubt, solid colours are always a winner.
- With kids, most often the more simple the clothes, the more beautiful the photograph.
- If kids are in dresses, PLEASE put shorts or leggings on underneath (not tights - they fall down). So many beautiful pictures get thrown out because underwear are showing. I don't want anyone fussing with their clothes and that includes telling girls to rearrange their dress because undies are showing.
