How to Have the Best Family Photo Session EVER!

Capturing authentic moments between families is at the heart of what I do. The secret to making those moments happen during your family photo session? It’s simple: just be yourself. But what does that mean, and how do you actually do it? Keep reading to find out.

Let Go of Perfection

As a parent, it’s so easy to fall into the trap of chasing perfection during a family photo session. You might feel pressure to make sure everyone is smiling at the camera, behaving perfectly, or looking picture-perfect. But here’s the truth: perfection isn’t what makes a great family photo.

Those stiff, posed photos don’t tell the story of your family. What truly makes your photos special are the unscripted moments—the laughter, the silliness, and the chaos that show your family’s personality.

And don’t worry about me! I’m not here to judge if your kids get a little wild or even toss out the occasional potty word. I have kids too, and I know they’re not robots. I actually love when their unique personalities shine through—it’s those moments that you’ll treasure forever.

If you’re hiring me, it’s because you want real moments, not forced smiles.

Be in the Moment with Your Family

Leave your worries at home, and let me take care of the rest. Your only job during your session is to be present with your family.

Laugh with your kids, cuddle them, and let them be themselves. Don’t stress about keeping clothes spotless (yes, even if you borrowed them from my client closet—they can be washed!). Some of my favourite shots are of kids with messy hair, playing in the dirt, or running wild. If the moment is real, it will be beautiful.

Let the Kids Be Kids

If your kids are a little wild or silly during the session, that’s okay! I actually encourage it. Think about when your kids are happiest—it’s usually when they’re being themselves, laughing, and having fun. Please do NOT tell them to smile – kids hate that!

Here’s my one rule: this is a no-discipline zone.

Please don’t threaten your kids with, “If you don’t smile, no iPad later!” because that kind of energy makes everyone stressed. Instead, let them play, giggle, and enjoy the moment.

When kids are free to be themselves, those are the moments you’ll look back on with the biggest smiles.

Do Your Best to Let Things Go

I know letting go of control can feel hard—believe me, I get it. During my own family photos, I catch myself wanting to tell my kids to calm down or follow instructions. But trust me, when you relax, your photos will reflect that ease and joy.

For example, imagine you’re sitting on a blanket with your child, and I suggest they whisper a secret in your ear. Instead, they burst out laughing and flop backward onto your legs. What do you think will make the better photo?

Stay Connected Through Touch

Physical connection adds so much emotion and depth to your photos. I always remind families to stay connected through touch—whether it’s holding hands, cuddling, or brushing a strand of hair out of your child’s face.

These small gestures bring out genuine emotion and help your photos feel even more heartfelt. So don’t be shy—show your love and affection throughout the session.

Create a Fun Family Memory

The experience of your family photo session will always be tied to the images you receive. That’s why it’s so important to create a positive memory.

If the car ride to the session is filled with arguments and the kids are scolded for not smiling perfectly, that tension will show in your photos. But when everyone is relaxed, happy, and having fun, that energy shines through.

This is why I’m constantly reminding you to go with the flow, let the kids do their thing, and trust the process. Whatever happens naturally is perfect, and those moments will become the memories you cherish.
