Best Summer Day Trip from Edmonton

A Hidden Gem for Young Families: Let‘s discuss Discovery Canyon, a perfect Day Trip from Edmonton.

If you’re looking for one of the best family-friendly activities that’s an easy day trip from Edmonton, I’ve got a gem for you. Just an hour and a half south in Red Deer is a place that feels like summer magic for young families – Discovery Canyon. It’s shallow, scenic, safe, and seriously fun. We took our three- and five-year-olds for the day, and it’s hands-down one of the best outings we’ve had in years.

What Is Discovery Canyon?

Discovery Canyon is a man-made water recreation area (with a natural feeling) nestled in Red Deer’s River Bend Golf and Recreation Area. It features a lazy river-style tubing run, a shallow lake, picnic areas, and a splashy, sandy beach spot — all completely free to enter. Yep, you read that right. There’s no admission fee to access the park. You only pay if you want to rent tubes ($7/person) for the tubing creek.

Why It’s Perfect for Families with Little Kids

We have two small kids, ages three and five, and this place was the sweet spot for them. The lazy river tubing area is shallow enough that at its deepest point, the water is only about mid-calf height.

Older kids can manage the run on their own, while toddlers and preschoolers will need to sit on a parent’s lap. The pace is slow and safe, and because the water’s not deep, it felt a lot less stressful than a typical water park.

We went on a hot summer weekend, expecting chaos, but Discovery Canyon didn’t feel packed. The layout makes it easy to find your own little spot. Whether you’re watching your kids from a beach towel under a tree or wading in with them, there’s room to breathe.

Is It Worth the Drive from Edmonton?

Absolutely it is worth the drive. If you’ve got little ones and you’re hunting for family-friendly day trips near Edmonton, Discovery Canyon is a no-brainer. The drive is easy, the activities are simple and low-stress, and you don’t need to over-plan or overpack. Our kids were so happy, we had a hard time convincing them to leave.
