Every fall, when the leaves start turning and the air gets that cozy chill, our family packs up and heads to Prairie Gardens in Bon Accord, and honestly, it’s so fun I’ve named it Edmonton’s best Halloween outing.
They have a dedicated Halloween Alley that your kids will love and a haunted house that is actually scary (too scary for me that’s for sure!). And if you get chilly, there are several beautifully decorated greenhouses to explore.
If you’re looking for something that feels festive but not chaotic, magical but not overdone, this place is it. Prairie Gardens is one of those rare spots that’s both laid-back and beautifully detailed, where your kids can run wild and you can actually exhale.
There’s no tight itinerary, no long lineups for rides, and no pressure to rush through everything. You can watch your kids explore without feeling like you’re missing something.
The atmosphere is calm and homegrown, but it’s also incredibly thoughtful. Everywhere you turn, there’s something intricate: hand-decorated scarecrows, rustic displays, tiny details that make it all feel like a Halloween storybook farm, just a short drive from Edmonton. It’s the perfect balance of simple and special.
If your kids are like mine, they’ll want to do everything. The slides, the corn maze, the petting farm. All of it feels like an adventure, but in that charmingly homemade way.
It’s not the loud, commercial kind of Halloween. It’s the kind that smells like kettle corn and hay bales and fresh air. The kind where kids can run until they’re red-cheeked and happy, and you can watch them knowing this is what childhood should feel like.
One of my favourite parts about Prairie Gardens is how unrushed it feels. You can sit for a bit, sip your coffee, and just take it all in.
If you’re a mom who’s been juggling everything (and honestly, when are we not?), this is the kind of day that helps you slow down. It reminds you that you don’t have to plan something extravagant to make a memory. Sometimes it’s just being present out in nature, watching your kids squeal down a slide, and feeling like you actually got to enjoy it too.
Bon Accord is only about 35 minutes from Edmonton, but once you’re there, it feels like you’ve stepped into another world. The drive itself is part of the charm: rolling fields, big skies, and that sense that you’re leaving behind the busy for a while.
And because it’s so family-friendly, you can easily spend half a day there and still make it home for naps or an early dinner. It’s wholesome, affordable, and perfectly fall.
• Bring layers — Alberta weather loves to surprise us.
• Bring a wagon. Theres a ton of room for it.
• Bring your own food. Food options on-site are very limited.
It’s rare to find something that feels good for everyone — the kids, the adults, and your overstimulated fall-loving heart. But Prairie Gardens somehow gets it right every single year.
Great Halloween adventures aren’t about being picture-perfect; it’s about being present. It’s about giving your kids a Halloween that’s fun, messy, and full of wonder … and giving yourself a chance to enjoy it too.
