What to Wear for Christmas Photos

There’s something so magical about Christmas photos. Maybe it’s the twinkle of the lights or how cozy everyone feels snuggled together, but these are always some of my favourite sessions of the year. The question I get most often is what to wear for Christmas photos. Choosing the right tones and textures helps your photos feel timeless, cohesive, and warm.

Keep It Simple with Neutrals

When in doubt, choose neutrals. Creams, taupes, soft browns, and beiges always photograph beautifully. These tones blend perfectly with my Christmas set, which is designed with warm woods, whites, and natural textures. Neutral clothing doesn’t compete with the background, so your family’s connection becomes the focal point of every image.

Think cozy knit sweaters, linen dresses, or textured corduroy pieces. Layers add interest without distraction—a cardigan over a simple dress reads beautifully in Christmas photos.

Add a Touch of Depth

If you want to incorporate colour, stick with rich, earthy tones like deep green, dark red, or muted burgundy. These shades still feel festive without looking overly bold or clashing with the natural elements of the set. A deep green velvet dress or a dark red shirt can bring a beautiful balance of warmth and texture while keeping everything elegant.

Use My Client Closet

One of the best parts of booking with me is getting access to my extensive Client Closet. I’ve carefully curated pieces for women and children that photograph beautifully and fit perfectly with the aesthetic of my sessions. From flowing dresses to soft baby rompers, you’ll find options that make styling your session effortless.

If you’re unsure what will look best, I’m happy to help you pull together a combination that works. Often, it’s as simple as choosing one statement piece, like a dress or textured sweater, and building the rest of the family’s outfits around it in coordinating tones.

Mimic the Set’s Natural Palette

This year’s Christmas set will be all about warmth and simplicity: soft whites, natural woods, and organic greenery. When you mirror those tones in your clothing, your images will look harmonious and elevated. Avoid bright reds, loud patterns, or anything with logos – those tend to stand out too sharply against the subtle background.

Instead, imagine your family as part of a warm, cozy Christmas morning scene. Think textures, warmth, and connection. That’s the feeling we’re going for.
