The Best Baby Items You Might Not Have Thought Of

When you’re preparing for your baby’s arrival, you’ll probably have the essentials covered: a car seat, crib, diapers, and all the basics. But there are a few lesser-known items that can make life with a newborn so much easier. Here’s my list of must-have baby items you might not have thought of!

And be sure to check out my favourite post-partum items to help you during your recovery journey!

1. A Small Fan for Baby’s Sleep Area

Did you know that proper air circulation can reduce the risk of SIDS ? A little fan placed in the room where your baby sleeps can make a big difference.

2. Blackout Curtains

You and your baby are going to need a lot of sleep, and a dark room is key to helping everyone rest better. Blackout curtains are a lifesaver for creating a sleep-friendly environment.

3. Zipper Swaddle

This might be a controversial opinion, but in my experience, babies love being swaddled. If your baby isn’t a fan, it could be the method—not the swaddle itself. A zipper swaddle makes things super easy, and once you try it, you’ll never go back.

4. Light-Up Car Seat Mirror with Music

I wish I had this with my first baby! This mirror comes with a remote and plays music—perfect for calming a crying baby in the car. Everyone I’ve recommended it to absolutely loves it.

5. Saline Drops

At some point, your little one will get a stuffy nose, likely in the middle of the night. Having saline drops on hand is crucial to help clear their airways and help them (and you!) get back to sleep quickly.

6. Large Disposable Changing Pads

Newborns poop a LOT. If you venture outside of your house, you’ll be changing their diaper in a lot of places and being able to place down a large clean pad to change them comfortably and hygienically will make your life so much easier.

7. Sound Machine That Doesn’t Shut Off

Trust me, this is a game-changer. Some sound machines turn off after a certain time, but having one that stays on all night is a must to keep your baby’s sleep consistent.

8. Microwave Sterilizer Bags

I didn’t have space for a countertop sterilizer, so microwave sterilizer bags were the perfect solution. They’re quick, easy, and don’t take up any space!

9. A clean shirt for you in the diaper bag

You’ll be amazed at the amount of throw up and drool your new baby will get all over you. A clean shirt for you (keep it in the car if your diaper bag is too full) will be such a nice treat if yours gets wet and stinks!

Nice to Have, But Not Necessary

1. A Baby Swing

My advice? Buy used. Some babies love swings; others don’t care for them at all. My first adored hers, while my second barely touched it.

2. Nursing Pillow

Once you get the hang of breastfeeding, a regular pillow will do. But in the early days, a nursing pillow can be a lifesaver, providing extra support when you’re both figuring things out.

These lesser-known baby items can make those early days easier, leaving you with more time to focus on what matters—bonding with your baby!
